Stomach Acidity, PH, Water and Your Health
Are you suffering from acid reflux or heartburn? Too low a stomach acid pH may be the cause. Do you wake up in the middle of the night with a scorching pain in the middle of your chest? Do not allow it to progress. Overtime it could develop into GERD, a much more serious threat to your health.
Over the counter antacids is the medicine of choice for most heartburn and acid reflux sufferers. If your symptoms are chronic, you may choose to see your family doctor. I went to my doctor. He prescribed pills that cost over $100 per bottle.
I’m sure you have looked into what remedies are available to relieve the heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. I did. You more than likely discovered that diet is the primary consideration. Most of the remedies tell you to eliminate spicy foods, tobacco, and alcohol. That makes a lot of sense. The trouble is that many of us enjoy those vices.
Stomach Acidity and pH
Researching stomach acidity and stomach problems, you will discover that there is a direct relationship between stomach acidity, pH, and water. Do you remember from your high school health and biology classes that our bodies are around 70% water? Do you recall doing litmus tests in chemistry classes? The litmus test measured the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. It measured the pH (parts hydrogen or potential hydrogen).
The pH is on a scale of 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. A low number indicates the substance is acidic. A high number shows that the substance is alkaline. If the litmus paper turns red, the substance is alkaline. If it turns blue, it is acidic.
The pH varies from one part of the body to another. For instance, the stomach is naturally acidic and has a pH of 2 to 3. Our blood pH should read about 7.35.
You can test your own pH levels. Use your own saliva and a simple pH test kit that you can buy for under $15. It is best done in between meals. Place some of your saliva in a plastic spoon and allow the litmus paper to change color. Follow the instructions provided in the kit to read the color that results from the test. A reading of around 7.0 is good.
Water
Water in the stomach lining produces bicarbonate that helps protect the lining from the powerful gastric juices in the stomach. Water aids to minimize heartburn and acid reflux produced by high stomach acid. IYou probably already know that most of the water that we drink today is acidic. It is no longer the pure drink we visualize coming from our underground aquifers and streams. Most bottled water is acidic and much of it is nothing more than tap water.
You can use the same kits that you used to test your saliva to test your water at home. Water that reads 7.0+ to 8.5 is ideal.
Many believe that our diet of processed foods which are mostly acidic, and our acidic water contribute to our overall ill health and obesity. Consider this, a young child’s pH level is normally around 7.5. An average American adult’s pH is 6.5. Keep in mind that pH is logarithmic scale and not a linear one. That means that the difference, is much greater than one. It is no wonder that over 60 million adults suffer from heartburn, acid reflux and GERD.
