Following a few simple rules in your lifestyle, you could make your heartburn troubles something of the past . In many instances of mild heartburn, these tips will either limit the number of episodes or end them altogether. Although they may mean a couple of lifestyle changes , a life with no pain of heartburn will be worth extra effort.

Normally, the causes of heartburn are just plain the intake of a lot of along with the wrong kinds of food. We reside in a nation of plenty, and people take advantage of that fact by going overboard in their diets. We’ve all gotten too accustomed to saying “Supersize it” when it comes to portion size, when smaller amounts would be adequate and even more healthy. With heartburn, it isn’t as much what you eat as it’s the amount of your food intake. It really does not matter what kind of food it is, how well it’s prepared, how great it tastes, or the nutritive value of what we eat, when the quantity is too large, too much of anything can trigger heartburn.

On top of overeating , people today tend to eat much too fast. In fact , we quite often literally eat on the run . Leave work, dash through a take out lane, shove the food down while driving to another appointment. Does that sound at all familiar to you personally ? If you’re not , then congratulations . If it does, however, it may be one of the things that’s causing your bouts with heartburn. In terms of eating, you should force yourself to eat slower .

Getting right down to the specifics of foods that trigger heartburn, fatty foods top the list. There are two major explanations why fatty foods give rise to heartburn problems more than other foods do. To start with , there’s the fact that they stay in our bodies longer. The longer the food hangs around, the much more likely it is to create problems . In addition , fatty foods are the ones which we usually overeat the most, things like French fries, chips, fried chicken, and so on . Rather than removing these favorite foods from your diet, however, think of other ways they could be prepared so that you can get rid of the fat.

Of course, fatty foods aren’t the sole culprit. If you overdo on spicy foods, chocolate, alcohol , coffee, or other caffeinated drinks, you may also find yourself dealing with heartburn. Learning to eliminate heartburn is all in eating a moderate volume of food rather than stuffing yourself, slowing down while eating, changing how you prepare some foods, and limiting the numbers of trigger foods which you include in your daily diet.

What’s the appeal of being an avid coffee drinker? Being a holistic lifestyle coach, I think I’ve broken in down to three reasons. The first one obviously is the good taste of coffee. The 2nd reason is the social factor that drinking coffee provides, and the 3rd reason is that coffee allows us an occasion to refocus on our lives. I am aware and I can feel that most readers are rolling their eyes, but hear me out.

Should you consume coffee once weekly, or maybe 2-3 instances per week, or perhaps you are like me and you drink coffee daily, incidentally that could cause you to be a coffee addict, then I am sure we’d all agree on this one declaration. “We take pleasure in the taste of coffee.” We appreciate a great cup of rich, aromatic, eye opening coffee. People have been enjoying the excellent flavor of coffee for a thousand years so I believe this declaration to be 100% precise. If you don’t agree then you are not likely an avid coffee drinker.

Naturally, people are social creatures and coffee shops allow us to satisfy this need. Consuming coffee allows us to sit with friends and family and talk about various topics of our lives. Where else can you go and pay just a few bucks, for your coffee of choice and spend a good hour or so chatting with friends. Add a few comfy chairs and pipe in some great songs and you’re set. Having coffee also provides for us a time to consider a few moments to refocus on our lives. If you are drinking a mug of coffee alone it gives us a few minutes of pleasure from this busy world. This can be a perfect time when we can think about our past, present, and future. It may even be a time when we choose to create life changing choices, such a career change, marriage, or having children.

There are a number of taste related factors in a mug of coffee that modify or degrade with time. This means that the flavor of a mug of coffee will continue to change, for the worse many would claim, just because time goes by. The simplest way to deal with this problem is to simply brew smaller amounts of coffee more often. As we all know, the very best cup of coffee is a freshly brewed cup of coffee. So as you get your next pot of coffee ready, think about how you are going to drink it. If you intend on having it without delay, no issue. But if you’re thinking of consuming it over a longer period of time, keep the factors we made above in your head. Organize how you will keep it hot and tasting fresh.

As a Raw Vegan, I understand there are numerous other reasons why people enjoy drinking coffee but these three appear to be the key reasons. You may concur or argue with these causes however I believe a single reason to be real. We love the taste of quality coffee.

If you’re an athlete looking for some sports nutrition tips, then there are a few things that you’ll need to consider. When competing in your chosen sport, you’ll probably already be focused on your training and know what you need to pack into a training session.

In this article I discuss a few sports nutrition tips that you can incorporate into your diet. They should help you to achieve a healthy balance to supplement what you’re doing.

To perform at your peak, your body needs to consume healthy and high quality foods to provide you with the energy levels you’ll need. It’s crucial that you follow a balanced diet at all meal times – starting with a healthy breakfast. I know that some athletes load up on protein rich foods or carbs. But your body needs a balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

You should consider enlisting the help of a sports nutritionist or personal trainer if you’ve been slack in your choice of foods. By seeking their advice on a few simple sports nutrition tips, you’ll be doing yourself a big favour as they’ll be able to teach you how to follow a balanced plan.

When you’re planning your workouts, also think about what you’re doing that day. The type of exercise or workout that you’re planning to do will dictate what you should eat before your session.

If you’re an early riser and train early, you may choose a light meal of toast, fruit or scrambled eggs. However, if you’re a later starter and train later during the day, you could consider choosing a meal containing complex carbs, a salad and protein. But stay flexible, as you’ll need to work out what food and quantities will give you the right amount of energy to sustain you throughout the day.

If you workout late afternoon or early evening, you’ll obviously need to eat and drink properly throughout the day before you work out. You should consider keeping some dried fruit and nuts as a handy snack. Alternatively, consider eating a banana or energy bar just before intense workouts. However, you may not need anything at all if your workout is going to be short and non exhausting – such as a brief lunchtime stroll.

If you’ve been working hard, you must replace lost fluids by drinking water. Make it a habit to drink before exercising to help keep you hydrated and also after exercise. If possible, drink in regular intervals during your workout.

You should eat within a couple of hours after exercising and preferably a meal consisting of carbohydrates and protein. A ratio of 4:1 is ideal, but if you’re not sure, read the labels on the energy drinks as most of them have this information.

As an athlete who knows the importance of good sports nutrition, don’t forget to consider seeking support from a sports nutrition expert. They may be a dietician, doctor or nutritionist.

But if you want to stay on top of your game, I hope you’ll follow some of my sports nutrition tips to help you stay there.

Oatmeal is still somewhat of a universal food although its heyday is long past. People use it in a large variety of meals, for skin care and even for skin afflictions. It offers soothing relief to self inflicted pains as well such as sunburns, poison ivy or oak afflictions or even just really tired and sore feet! With loads of benefits relating to the glycemic index of oatmeal it seems well worth investigating. So what is it that is so important about the glycemic index of oatmeal anyway?

There are many stories about the important of the glycemic index of oatmeal. There was a farmer who was having serious digestive problems, they told him he may need to consider surgery.

Instead he did some research and discovered Steel Cut Oats and found an entire new level of balance and harmony in his life. He stated that after he began eating those oats, his life just ‘straightened out’ and he was able to lower his blood sugar as well. This farmer became a lifelong consumer of steal cut oats I can tell you!

Oat kernels all look very much like wheat in build. They have their own covering of bran which can protect the germ that sits inside the grain. And because the oat kernel is pliable, the nutritious bran is not wasted. Additionally whole grain oats will have seven different B vitamins, nine minerals, vitamin e and even iron and calcium. Oatmeal is beginning to sound like a miraculous food and products.

So if you think you are at least as tough as a farmer then why don’t you take a look around and study how you might benefit from learning more about the glycemic index of oatmeal. Anyone who is truly serious about nutrition should be completely aware of the glycemic index which is basically a list of high ranking carbs which is based upon blood sugar levels in the body.

There are many benefits to retaining a healthy GI diet. Diets high on the GI are positively linked ailments and diseases such as heart disease, our nation’s biggest killer. Foods that have a GI under 60 are considered low GI. The steal cut oats glycemic index is around 42 and regular old fashioned oats ranked at about 50 on the glycemic index of oatmeal. Since all of this has many benefits for all age groups then bring home a bag of oats to your family and get them to wise up with you and get healthy!

The pioneer in this research is Mr. Subhra Chakraborty. Generally potatoes are the source of carbohydrate and people generally exclude it from their diet. This tuber is now rich with essential proteins needed for your body. This will be a great contribution to improve the nutrition of people, as many people in the developing and developed countries are using potatoes in their daily diet.

Availability of potato and its economical price will be the most advantage for the people in the developing countries. By the technique of Genetic engineering, the scientists have developed this protein rich potato.

There has been widespread agitation against genetically modified crops causing harm to nature. But scientists are giving assurance about this transgenic crop that this is nature friendly as the genetic modification of potato has been made by using the amaranth seed, which is also an edible crop.

The AmA1 (Amaranth Albumin 1) gene from the amaranth seed is taken and it is then inserted into the potato to generate this protein rich genetically modified potato. This hybrid potato will contain about sixty percent more protein content than the natural potato. Generally the potatoes lack essential amino acids, and this modified variety contains the required essential amino acids like lysine, tyrosine and sulphur for humans. The production rates of these hybrid potatoes are also higher; there was an increase of about ten to twenty-five percent. After clearing the regulatory proceedings of the government only this product will be commercially available.

More than half of our total body weight is water, just plain old water. A newborn baby is about three-quarters fluids. Our brain is amazingly made up of nearly 85 percent water! One doctor (Mark Stengler, N.D.) has said that our bodies are really the middle of a streambed as the water is coming in through various paths and going out in nearly as many ways (urine about 60 %, sweat 20%, respiration loss 15%, and stool 5%). Medical doctor James F. Balch (Author, Prescription For Nutritional Healing) has said that the body’s water supply is responsible for and involved in nearly every body process including digestion, absorption, circulation, and excretion. Also he (Balch) states that water is essential to maintain normal body temperature. Situations in which humans endure extreme deprivation have shown that a person can survive without food for as long as four or five weeks but can survive only four or five days without water! One page on The Cleveland Clinic web site says that getting enough fluid is essential for top (athletic) performance. Losing just 2% to 3% of your weight from water loss can decrease your performance by 10% to 15%. Further down the same page the author says that dehydration is the loss of water from body tissues.

It disturbs the balance of essential substances in your body – particularly sodium, potassium and chloride. Dehydration not only decreases your performance, but also can seriously impair your health. Signs of dehydration include dark urine, a small amount of urine, rapid heart rate, headaches, flushed or dry skin, coated tongue, irritability and confusion. The Mayo Clinic cautions that beverages with caffeine or alcohol can increase fluid output, making it more difficult to stay adequately hydrated. So, just as I thought, all liquids are not the same!

So now that we (likely) all agree about the great need for water some questions still remain. Water: how important is it to my health and do I drink enough? I can’t be deficient, can I? After all, when I’m thirsty, I drink, right? So how could I not have enough of something so common and easily obtained?

Of course, I know I’m not in any danger of dying of thirst or suffering a collapse. I suspect, however, that I (and perhaps most of you) have been seriously slowed down by unrecognized thirst in the past. Let me illustrate by my experience: For many years I have known that many doctors and other healthcare professionals advise drinking eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day (the so called 8×8 rule). Until a few months ago I shrugged this off as "excess". Who can drink eight big glasses of water on top of the coffee, teas, milk, and/or pop most of us drink daily? But this advice nagged at me. I began to look for signs of subtle, unrecognized thirst. I remember that my mouth was often extremely dry, especially when waking up at night after (apparently) breathing through my mouth when deep asleep. Another observation of mine was that I often had quite dark urine. Many days I felt tired or sluggish, even though I had eight or more hours of sleep. My eyes also felt dry many times. Constipation was another frequent problem. Of course I realize my age has something to do with this (I’m 70). But, always the optimist, I thought I could improve these symptoms.

I "forced" myself to start drinking more water. I bought a water filter pitcher (a Clear 2 O, but other brands are good as well). Using this pitcher freed me from drinking the city tap water (and saved on bottled water). In addition to the chlorine and (possible) toxins contained in it the city water was usually too cold or, sometimes too warm to enjoy drinking a whole glassful at once. I found the water tasted better also so I actually started to look forward to my "extra water" instead of looking at it as a chore (like taking medicine). One thing I did was to make sure I drank a full glass of water before having my first cup of coffee in the morning. I also drank water (an 8 ounce glass) before going to bed at night. And I tried to be diligent in getting an extra four or five glasses during the day and early evening. The change in my symptoms likely caused by thirst was gradual, but impressive and welcome! The greatest blessing was the improvement in my somewhat severe constipation problem. Those of you unfortunates who have had this curse know how miserable it can make your life. (Note that I also eat as many salads and fresh veggies and fruits as I reasonably can, and I exercise. But I was doing this well before I started the extra water regimen so I don’t think those things alone caused my improvement). On more and more days I felt energetic. The feeling of being tired or sluggish was much less frequent. My urine was nearly clear or very light yellow. My eyes are less dry now and my mouth is seldom anywhere near as dry as before. The most obvious improvement in a symptom: I don’t feel as thirsty as often as before (yeah, I know, rocket science).

While I think my experience is fairly typical of someone my age and activity level I caution you to not blindly follow my action plan regarding water intake. Everyone is different. Your results may not be the same. Get an exam or physical from a medical doctor before starting a major change in your diet or fluid intake. And be aware that thirst symptoms can be caused by other conditions, some serious (such as diabetes). Use due diligence in your health plan.

How Sad (something more)

While we obsess about the correct water intake, there are still over an estimated 1,067,789,000 people that do not have easy access to clean drinking water according to WHO/UNICEF statistics. You and I can help make things better. One organization that is doing great good, IMHO, is CharityWater.org. Go to their website, watch the amazing video, and donate if you can. (Clean) water is that important.

Soy foods have been heavily marketed as being good for you. But are they really? Despite heavy industry promotional efforts, the facts shed some doubt.

In North America, we use it as a meat or flour substitute, tofu, as a protein powder, soymilk, cheese, snacks or protein bars, even as a cheap filler in many fast food hamburgers. While there are some studies that point to health benefits, a vast body of research reveals enough question marks and outright risk as to suggest severely limiting or avoiding it altogether.

Here are a few things to consider:

While soy is sold as a complete protein it is very low in the amino acids methionine and cysteine, reducing its protein profile. Also, lysine, another important amino acid, is destroyed during processing.

Only 25 grams of soy protein isolate, the amount typically added to a protein drink, contains roughly 50-70mg of phytoestrogens. In one study of premenopausal women, that was more than the amount shown to impair thyroid function, responsible for metabolism. The effects lasted for three months.

Germany recently joined France, the U.K. and Israel by warning that babies should not be given soy infant formula due to the high estrogenic isoflavones, which mimic hormones in the body. It is essentially equivalent to giving them birth control pills, potentially causing developmental problems. The main phytoestrogens from soy are daidzein and genistein.

Soy phytoestrogens disrupt immune function, and animal studies shows it actually shrinks the thymus gland, an important component of the immune system.

Studies report reproductive problems, infertility, thyroid and liver disease due to the dietary isoflavones in soy in such diverse animals as mice, cheetah, quail, pigs, rats, sturgeon and sheep, even into their offspring.

99% of soybeans are genetically modified. Animals instinctively will not eat GM foods, a clue to their harm. It also means soy farmers get to use very large quantities of pesticides and herbicides.

Soy increases the body’s need for Vitamin D.

Animals in their natural habitat instinctively eat soybeans to curb fertility in times of food shortages. In humans, it causes lowered sperm counts, decreases testosterone and lowers libido.

Hexane, a serious toxin and a byproduct of oil refining, is used during non-organic soybean processing, of which the residue remains in the final product.

Soybeans are subject to very high heat during processing which destroys all enzyme activity.

Soy inhibits trypsin, an important enzyme for digesting protein, potentially causing digestive distress and an impaired pancreas.

Soybeans contain haemagglutinin, causing red blood cells to clump together. It also contains phytates that impair the absorption of calcium and other essential minerals.

Although traditionally fermented soy such as tempeh, miso and natto are much better choices, they still have some phytoestrogens. One of the biggest myths is that the Chinese and Japanese consume great quantities of soy. In fact, their average daily consumption is about 2 teaspoons daily, mere condiment status.

If soybeans are a regular part of your diet, it might be worth re-evaluating whether the benefits are really there, or just a clever bit of marketing.

Learn 13 reasons why protein is so important in our normal daily diet & why it is especially important when losing weight!

People use protein for many different reasons, in fact most people automatically associate increasing their protein with ending up looking like a ‘body builder or muscle man’ which isn’t what most people want to achieve. Yes body builders do use protein to the extreme to totally change the look of their bodies and to repair and rebuild their muscles.

However there is a huge proportion of the UK population that don’t take in enough protein each day and it’s simply because they are totally unaware of how much protein they should be having. For example a 5 ft 7″ female (reasonably tall) weighing approximately 9 stone (underweight for height if anything) would require a staggering 85g of protein approximately each day!!

Now that doesn’t sound a lot I know, but in fact that’s the equivalent of eating around 3 average size chicken fillets each day! So break it down again, think along the lines of what most people have for their breakfast:- toast with cereals, yes the milk contains some dairy protein, lunch:- perhaps a sandwich, crisps, piece of fruit and a bar of chocolate seems a pretty average working day lunch. But depending upon what the sandwich contains, maybe Tuna, ham, beef, egg or just salad then this too contains a small amount of protein and for this example lets say the person eats a chicken fillet for their evening meal giving them an extra 25g of animal protein.

In total for the day, they’ve probably managed to hit around 30-40g of protein for the whole day! Nowhere near the 85g required to keep a 5 ft 7″ slightly underweight female’s body functioning correctly, let alone a male or someone who is overweight. So having insufficient protein during the day will mean that they will constantly be hungry and more than likely start to snack and experience cravings. So you can see why protein shakes are so popular as they provide a quick infusion of protein to the body.

Below are 13 reasons why our body needs the correct amount of protein each day.

1.	Not enough protein can lead to cravings for sugar and carbohydrates it can lead to mood swings, depression & a lack of energy in the afternoons.

2.	Protein is excellent for fighting off hunger pangs because it increases the feeling of fullness for longer. It actually sends messages to the brain telling the brain that it is full and this feeling fuller for longer helps to prevent people snacking on the wrong foods.

3.	Too much animal protein isn’t good for the body either, it can cause too much fat, too many calories and higher cholesterol and can have longer term consequences on the bowl, the colon and the kidney. Whereas vegetable/plant protein – ie Soy Protein is extremely kidney, heart, blood and cholesterol friendly and can actually help to reduce cholesterol.

4.	Our bodies naturally store carbohydrates which slow down the metabolism, protein helps the body work harder to burn off the carbohydrates which in turn helps to speed up the metabolism.

5.	Protein builds lean muscle and reduces body mass. Which when dieting means you lose inches. Think of 1lb of fat sat on a plate and think of 1 lb of lean chicken fillet, they both weigh the same but the area that the fat covers is far larger than the area that the lean chicken takes up. This is what happens when you introduce more protein into your diet when trying to lose weight. Protein helps to build lean muscle.

6.	Protein repairs and rebuilds the body.

7.	Hair, nails, organs and muscles are all made up of protein and if we don’t provide the body with sufficient protein each day then the body will rob it’s own muscle mass to get what it needs!

8.	Protein stops muscle loss whilst dieting and promotes genuine fat loss which is exactly what you want when losing weight. You want the weight loss to come from the fat stores and not through loss of lean tissue.

9.	Soy protein is 100% absorbed by the body which means it’s not inflammatory on the digestive system.

10.	Protein gives better body shape whilst keeping body bulk.

11.	Protein helps to keep weight off once you achieve your target weight.

12.	Athletes are well known for using protein to help their bodies recover, repair and rebuild after exercise. Soy protein is the fat free way for them to keep lean and fit.

13.	Vegetarians struggle terribly to get their protein intake up and quite often have a carbohydrate loaded diet which is why many vegetarians struggle to lose weight. Soy protein is an excellent way to redress this situation.

Whether you are an adult getting ready to take on the world at work, or a student who needs to be fuelled for a day full of learning at school, breakfast is essential to making sure the day starts off right. For many though, the morning rush prevents them from having a healthy breakfast – but skipping this important meal doesn’t only impact your day, but also your health.

"Research shows that adults who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight or have a higher body mass index than adults who eat breakfast daily," says registered dietitian, Sue Mah. "A healthy, balanced breakfast not only kick-starts your morning but also helps control your appetite throughout the day."

Starting each day with a healthy breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. Mah, in partnership with the Peanut Bureau of Canada, offers the following tips to get your day started right:

Plan ahead –With a little preparation, you can plan a quick and healthy breakfast rather than stopping at the local coffee shop or drive-thru. Freeze slices of homemade Peanut Butter Banana bread and simply reheat. Team it up with a glass of low fat milk and breakfast is ready in no time. Or whip up a smoothie made with fresh/frozen fruit and low fat vanilla yogurt.

Keep it interesting – Mix up your breakfast menu and include a variety of wholesome foods. Remember to add some protein to help you stay full for longer. Try cheese and crackers, a scrambled egg sandwich, or peanut butter on whole grain toast. Even last night’s dinner leftovers can work.

Set yourself up for success – To avoid the morning rush, try moving a few tasks to the evening before. Pack the kids’ lunches, set the table for breakfast, and pick your outfit for the next day. You’ll have less stress and more time in the morning to enjoy a healthy breakfast.

Not only important for adults, breakfast is equally essential for children. Research shows that students who eat a balanced breakfast before school are better prepared for the day and have better memory, problem-solving skills and creative abilities.

Many bodybuilders believes that taking whey protein is an essential part of building muscles. In this article, we will take a look at the facts relating to whey as a supplement & help you decide how you should pursue this strategy.

Whey protein is process where milk turns into cheese. You can also find it in dairy products, eggs, soy protein & vegetables, but these doesn’t compare to the whey powder.

It’s been suggested that whey has a role as an antioxidant & immune method builder. The best way to take it is by powder form mixed with juice or milk, spread out during the day to keep a positive nitrogen balance.

Its also favorable in the supply of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) which are important in the building & maintaining of muscles. Whey provides the building blocks to generate amino acids that the body uses to create muscle tissue, which is why bodybuilders favors it so. Lots of studies have shown that it consists of the perfect combo of amino acids to produce the optimal performance in the body.

Just remember that you need to figure how much protein you are getting from the food you eat & spread out the remaining whey protein balance throughout the day. Whey protein is a safe supplement to use but no more that 30 grams should be taken in a sitting, it can congest the liver.

The most serious bodybuilders takes up to 150 grams a day, but for active trainers it can be calculated by your weight & multiplying it by 1 or 1.5.

The safety of whey protein has been documented in numerous scientific studies, & there is a clear indication that if taken consistently & combined with regular exercise, it will result in a major muscle gain.
