			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Training for speed and strength does not have to be very fancy. It doesn&#8217;t need to be all that scientific either. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, there are proper ways of planning, set/rep schemes, volume, frequencies, duration, intensity, and a whole other load of variables that go into a great program&#8230;</p>
<p>But you shouldn&#8217;t have to analyze the program to death and try to make it perfect. Why? Because there is no perfect program in existence. In reality, every program/workout/routine (whatever you&#8217;d liked to call it) will work for some time; but eventually you&#8217;ll stall out and either hit a wall or regress. Not good!</p>
<p> <span id="more-1382"></span>
<p>There are many common mistakes that I see all too often and most of the time they just need a simple fix to help get results. Check &#8216;em out&#8230;</p>
<p>1.) <strong>Too Much Volume</strong> &#8211; Less is more, especially when you are looking for all-out, blazing speed. Speed is the critical &quot;game-changer&quot; and more often than not, the faster team or athlete will ALWAYS have the advantage. I usually almost always start my athletes out with low volume sprints 1-2 times per week, never exceeding 200-300 yards in total volume (the number of sprints you ran X the distance on each sprint). Think about it: do you think running endless repeat 100 yard sprints, as fast as possible,with 30 seconds rest will do anything for your speed? Sure, it might make you tired; it might make you sore; you may even throw up&#8230; Most sports require you accelerate anywhere from 5-30 yards. I usually recommend the &quot;short-to-long&quot; approach with most team sport athletes, where you begin sprinting at shorter distances for a couple weeks, then gradually extending the distance and volume out each week.</p>
<p>2.) <strong>Too Many Exercises</strong> &#8211; This one is extremely common. For example: you walk into a regular gym on a Monday (also known as universal bench press day) and everyone and their mother is performing every exercise known for the chest; bench press, incline press, decline press, chest flyes, machine flyes; and often times each one will be performed with ZERO warm up, too many sets, and way too little rest. This basically is doing absolutely nothing but getting you the &quot;pump&quot; which only lasts for a short while after you&#8217;re through exercising anyways. Instead of focusing on how many exercises you should be doing, I think the better choice would be to focus on the quality of movement and continually adding weight to the bar each week.</p>
<p>3.) <strong>Body Part Splits</strong> &#8211; This is another very common occurring trend that really is only effective if you&#8217;re very advanced and have built up a substantial base of strength and muscle. Body part split routines typically explore a bodybuilder&#8217;s routine, for example:</p>
</p>
<ul>
<li>Monday &#8211; Chest </li>
<li>Tuesday &#8211; Back, Biceps </li>
<li>Wednesday- Legs </li>
<li>Thursday- Shoulders, etc..</li>
</ul>
<p>You see that each workout works in isolating muscle groups; in reality, when does the human body EVER work in isolation? Not only is this routine very ineffective for most trainees in building muscle and strength, it&#8217;s really BORING. That type of routine would leave me bored to tears and who really wants to perform 5-6 different chest exercises in 1 day? Instead of a split routine, switch up to either 3-day per week &quot;full body&quot; workouts, or 4-day per week upper/lower split. By doing this you will eliminate boredom, your workouts will be much more effective, you&#8217;ll be in the gym much less, and you&#8217;ll get way better results. I prefer 3-day per week full body workouts for most people, but 4-days per week has also served me well too.</p>
<p>4.) <strong>Employing Fancy Gadgets and Gizmos</strong> &#8211; This is pretty funny, but sad also. Parachutes, ladders, ankle weights, hand weights, thighweights, tubes, cones, velcro/band strapped to every joint on your body, etc.. The list could go on. When it comes to speed training, the simplest methods and tools yield the greatest results. I have used nothing but a hill, sled/tire with a strap and belt for resisted sprints, set of cones to mark off distances, and a medicine ball to develop extremely fast and explosive athletes. In order to move fast&#8230; You need to practice moving fast. If you&#8217;re going to utilize resisted sprints that&#8217;s fine; sprint up a hill, or use a sled/tire with a 25-45 lb. plate in it and start sprinting. Keep the rest period longer if you&#8217;re after speed, keep them shorter if you want some extra conditioning and fat loss.</p>
<p>Remember, this stuff is simple. Yes there is a science to programming and planning (that&#8217;s why there are professionals out there that do this for a living), but you can still get results by doing the simple things, being consistent, and making sure you are making progress every time you train.</p>
<p>Have a purpose, a goal, and a plan, and you will not fail.</p>

		<title>Be Sweet to Your Feet</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I never used to pay much attention to my feet. I mean, they were just there. They did what feet were supposed to do &#8211; provide my body a base of support and mobility. I just assumed and took for granted that they would continue to do that with minimal attention from me. And they did! Sure I washed them when in the shower. Yes, I clipped toenails. I did purchase shoes that fit reasonably well, provided of course that they looked exceedingly cool. Beyond that though, I pretty much left them alone. That was when I was young, strong and (cough, cough) invincible!<span id="more-1375"></span></p>
<p>As I now know however, I am neither invincible nor young (but still hold onto strong) and I do need to afford my feet the respect and care they rightly deserve for having carried me along for 53 years thus far and, more importantly, for carrying me through the many years to come. Think for a moment about the pounding that, as runners, our feet take over the course of a life of running. We pound our feet into the ground at anywhere from 160 to 180 steps per minute during our runs. Over the course of a 10k run at, say, at a 7:30 pace, that&#8217;s nearly 8150 steps or 4075 steps per foot. That&#8217;s just for a 45 minute run! Now say we&#8217;re on a training program where we run 24 miles each week &#8211; not at all unreasonable. That&#8217;s equates to 32,600 steps or 18,300 per foot. Just for running! Don&#8217;t forget that you&#8217;re still walking on them, standing on them in lines or at the water cooler at work, shoving things out of the way with them, etc. You get the idea! Our feet rarely get time off! So, with that said then here is what I personally resolve to do for my feet &#8211; now and well into the future.</p>
<p>I resolve that from this day forward I will make sure that all footwear I entrust my feet to (not just running shoes) will fit properly and will include enough room in the toe box for my toes to stretch and breath yet still maintain a snug fit so that they do not rub around inside the shoe possibly causing major blisters or calluses to develop. I will make sure that the shoes fit comfortably over my entire foot &#8211; not too tight where circulation is impeded, not too loose that my feet rub and develop blisters.</p>
<p>I will not run in worn out shoes any longer. Shoes that look as if the dog and all his buddies took a turn at them. (you know what I mean! Go look in your dog&#8217;s bed!) Those shoes just will not work any longer &#8211; if they ever did! The structure of them has been worn down to a point where I do more damage wearing them than not. I will even go to a running shoe specialist if I have to in order to get properly fitted for the correct shoe for my running type.</p>
<p>I am a heavy runner who tends to under-pronate. By way of definition, pronation refers to the roll of your foot/ankle from foot strike to toe off. Normal pronation is slight inward roll, over-pronation is too much of an inward roll and under-pronation or supination is rolling outwards on your foot. I also have a normal arch. I look for a shoe that will help to bring my running gait to a more neutral pronation. It is widely stated that a running shoe&#8217;s effective life span is anywhere between 200 to 500 miles, again depending on your foot type and the type of runner you are. There is then a direct impact on how many miles you will get out of a pair of running shoes. Knowing what foot type you have is a big step towards being able to make proper decisions in your running footwear!</p>
<p>In addition to the correct shoes I will make sure that my feet are wrapped in adequate socks! No more &#8216;whatever&#8217;s in the drawer&#8217; or &#8216;they&#8217;ve only been used a couple of times. How sweaty can they be?&#8217; Now I will make sure that I doff clean socks for each and every run and that these socks will be of sufficient substance and material to help with cushioning, will allow my feet to breathe, and will not aid in the formation of blisters or calluses. No cotton socks which do not wick moisture away from your feet either making them feel cold and clammy or opening the way for those doggone blisters to appear. I go back and forth on my preference on thick or thin socks. I have some of each.</p>
<p>I resolve that from this day forward I will heed each and every signal of discomfort that my feet communicate to me. I am well aware that they have most likely been doing this all along and that I, wrapped in my self-made sheath of invincibility, have elected to ignore these communications. I will do so no longer! I will listen and (more importantly) hear when my heel screams from the constant rubbing against the back of my shoe. (I don&#8217;t expect that to happen any longer though as I have previously resolved to buy only proper fitting shoes) I will continue to use my heel cup and whatever other orthotics are needed to ensure my feet are protected on the run. I will be careful when choosing orthotics though as the combination of corrective orthotics and running shoes also designed to correct something in the runner&#8217;s gait may well do more harm than good. I do know that there are trained experts at my nearby running shoe store to help guide me. If I have to I will even take a day off from running and allow my feet total rest and recovery!</p>
<p>I resolve to allow my feet to breathe unencumbered at times during the day. Heck, I used to walk around barefoot for an entire summer! I can certainly give them an hour a day now! Let &#8216;em stretch, let &#8216;em expand, let &#8216;em feel the fresh air! I will also pamper my feet more than I used to (which was never!). I will massage them, I will soak them, and (a nice Epsom salt foot bath is a wonderful thing!) I will clip toenails properly, I will wash them and not just let the spray from the shower get them wet and call it good!</p>
<p>&#8220;The human foot is a biological masterpiece that amazingly endures the stresses of daily activity,&#8221; states Marybeth Crane, DPM, a spokesperson for the College and a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and herself a serious runner and marathoner. &#8220;For runners, the feet are more vulnerable to injury than any other part of the body, and these athletes should be on the alert for signs of foot problems that can slow them down if not treated promptly.&#8221; I will ice when I need to, I will stretch when I need to, I will learn and understand about bursitis, plantar fasciitis, heel pain syndrome, stress fractures, blisters, calluses, black toe, yellow toe, foot fungous, athlete&#8217;s foot, and Morton&#8217;s toe syndrome. I will arm myself with knowledge and I will treat any potential injury, be it from overuse (such as Plantar Fasciitis or Achilles Tendonitis) or freak accident with intelligence, patience and care.</p>
<p>I will endeavor to cross train once or twice each week with activities that do not stress my feet as sorely as running does. By swimming, cycling, aqua-jogging or some other non-impact type of exercise, I will continue to stay fit but at the same time reduce the amount of direct stress I place on my feet when I pound the pavement.</p>
<p>These things I resolve and will do for my feet because my feet carry me where I want to go. Without them I, quite literally, go nowhere! Without them I do not run and that, simply stated, is not an acceptable alternative!</p>

There&#8217;s no point where you actually start building muscle, and there&#8217;s also no real point where you stop building muscle. <p>With that in mind, many people are concerned with how long it takes to start seeing muscle gains. This will vary from person to person, depending on how fast your metabolism is and how well you can support muscle on your frame. While you&#8217;re always building muscle, like I said, how long it takes to show will depend on several key factors. If you have a high bodyfat content, then it&#8217;ll take longer before you start to show muscle, whereas people with low bodyfat will appear to gain muscle more quickly. </p>

<p>Your diet will also play a role: if you eat a lot of food, then you&#8217;ll appear to gain muscle more quickly. Many people also don&#8217;t drink enough water when sedentary and will therefore appear to get bigger when hydrating for working out. This doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;ve gained muscle, it&#8217;s just water weight.   </p>
<p>The general rule is that it takes about 8 weeks before you start seeing real results. Certain people can get them sooner, especially if you eat a ton of calories and work out hard. I was actually able to see good results in as little as 4 weeks, but I was using an anabolic diet and was eating about 6,000 calories a day when I started. Not to mention I had also worked out previously, so my muscles adapted more quickly than someone else&#8217;s would.    </p>
<p>The 8 week thing comes into play because you can only be expected to gain between .5 and 1.5lbs of muscle each week. Your body can&#8217;t build it much more quickly than that, and this&#8217;ll actually slow down as you get bigger. After you&#8217;ve gained between 5 and 10 pounds, you&#8217;ll start to appear bigger. Any less than that and it can definitely be mistaken for posture or water weight. So the answer to the question of how long it taeks to build muscle is: about 8 weeks, depending on your bodytype and genetics. Some people will show results in 4 weeks, while others might take 12. You usually won&#8217;t see much of a visual change until you&#8217;ve gained a solid 5-10 pounds of muscle.</p>

		<title>Men&#8217;s Acne &#8211; One Teenage Experience We Would Rather Not Relive</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am a fifty-eight-year old male, and I first began to experience acne when I was fifteen years-old and in Grade 11.</p>
<p>The reason that I recall the initial onset of acne so clearly is that I was playing for the Junior basketball team at that time, and we used to practise until 6 or 6:30, and by the time I had showered and walked home it was usually 7:30 or even later and I had missed dinner with my family. Since my mother insisted that she was not running an all-night diner, at the age of fifteen I was on my own as far as making dinner was concerned, which was fine by me, and invariably my meal would consist of a hamburger or hot dog and french fries, which I could whip up in a matter of minutes.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not the reason that I recall my first experience of acne.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t the late basketball practices or the hot dogs and french fries for dinner. It was Fern, the adorable, dark-haired cheerleader. Fern was a year behind me, in Grade 10, and her brother Michael, was a year ahead of me, and one of the best players on the Senior basketball team.<span id="more-1370"></span></p>
<p>There was no real reason for Michael to invite me over to his house to watch college basketball games with him and his friends, but he did, on several occasions, and that is why I have such a clear recollection of the time in my life when I first began to suffer from acne.</p>
<p>Michael knew that I had a crush on his sister.</p>
<p>Do I ever remember being invited to come over to Michael (and Fern&#8217;s) house on Saturday nights to watch the broadcast of the college basketball games on the local Buffalo channel, and worrying myself sick about the pimples on my face, and praying that they would disappear by Saturday, which they never did.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t know anything about the causes of acne back then, or how to treat it, and I thought it had something to do with working up a sweat during basketball practice, and eating french fries every night for dinner.</p>
<p>That was over 40 years ago, and I have learned a lot since then, but guess what?</p>
<p>I still have problem skin, and I have to take very good care of it, or I could look just as bad as I did back when I was fifteen. Well, perhaps, not quite, but I am not about to chance it.</p>
<p>What I have learned is that if you have acne-prone skin, which in most cases means that your skin over-produces oil, there are three essential steps that you need to do every day:</p>
<p>1) You need to keep your skin scrupulously clean to remove dirt, oil and bacteria 2) You need to exfoliate your skin to remove the dead skin cells and promote regeneration 3) You need to hydrate your skin so that it does not over-produce oil And for exiting blemishes, there is an additional essential step: 4) You need to spot treat your existing lesions so that they dry up and heal without causing any scarring Those are the essential steps in any effective acne control system. Do them consistently and, your acne is virtually guaranteed to dramatically improve.</p>
<p>There are some memories of my teenage years that I wish I could relive.</p>
<p>But acne is not one of them.</p>
<p>Many young men and young women, too, believe that acne is simply an awkward stage of physical development that is outgrown eventually, and not a minute too soon.</p>
<p>For many young people, it is just that.</p>
<p>For others, it is a problem that persists well into adulthood.</p>
<p>I am one of those people, and the best advice I can give anyone else who is, is to be diligent, conscientious and consistent in your daily skin care regimen.</p>
